GM's LS-based series of car and truck V8 engines utilize front and rear seals with Teflon inner sealing lips.
For proper seal function and longevity it is critical that the seals be aligned perfectly concentric to the balancer hub and rear sealing surface on the crankshaft.
On the LS engine, the oil pan is a stressed member and adds to block rigidity.
For this reason, it can't simply be slapped in place; along with the front and rear engine covers, it must be carefully aligned with the block.
You are buying a tool that is used to install the front cover on any GM LS engine. This tool mimics the balancer to center the cover on the front seal OR locates on the ID of the seal bore in the cover without the seal installed.You will have to exercise care to align horizontally the cover to the oil pan. Installation of front cover: (no seal installed in Front cover):
-Loosely install the front cover
-Install the seal tool over the snout of the crankshaft using the large end
-Check the alignment to the oil pan
-Tighten the front cover bolts to specifications
-Install the balancer lip seal

Align Seal On Front, Rear, & Oil Pan Covers
Mis-Alinged Seals & Covers WI ll Probly leak if not centered corectly on mating surfaces. Tools help in correct installation, so you don't have to do a second time s Afer an engine install. Do it right the first time!

The proper tools for the job.
So when we started planning this 5.3 build we looked at acquiring the proper tools to assemble this and other engine in the future. These seal install tools worked PERFECTLY. As well did the oil pan alignment tool. Even my local small garage mechanic said that this oil pan alignment tool, was something that they have needed to get for doing general maintenance and repairs on LS engines. And the price point is very affordable. Having the right tool to do the job is key to long term repairs.
