The Gen III engines were used from 1997 through 2002. These engines used a 24x crankshaft trigger wheel and a cam sensor mounted at the rear of the block. In 2003, GM introduced its Gen IV engine. The main identifier is a 58x crank trigger wheel with the cam sensor moved to the timing chain cover.
